Performances organized by the association

We organize the following three performances

New Year competition for all schools of nihon buyo

A path to success for young dancers

This is a performance organized as a competition for rising, young dancers. A preliminary round is held each year in September, and dancers who achieve a high marks in the final round performance are presented with various awards, including the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Encouragement Award. The competition is recognized for its role in training the next generation of dancers in the classic repertoire of nihon buyo, to continue performing and developing the classic repertoire.

The Japanese Classical Dance Association performance

A grand performance bringing together both young and accomplished dancers

Leading dancers who represent today’s nihon buyo come together from various schools to show their skill in three days of performances. Since the first performance in 1956, it has been held more than fifty times. It is the largest in scale among nihon buyo performances, and is noted for its high standard. Several pieces are filmed and broadcast by NHK.

Performing a new piece

From tradition to creation – a new form of nihon buyo

New works of nihon buyo are created based on classic dance techniques, and presented. Recent performances have included adaptations of a manga masterpiece and Western theatre, proposing new forms of nihon buyo born from a contemporary context.
